It never ceases to amaze me what goes on in the minds of little people and I think we can learn a lot about having the right attitude to life from listening to children. This was hammered home to me yesterday by our six year old daughter.
She came up to me around lunch time and said that she had been thinking all day about starting a business of her own. She stated that she couldn’t do mechanics because she was too small to reach into the engine of the cars (she has seen me do this for all of her life so I guess that’s where she got that idea). Then her eyes lit up. She had learned last week how to make paper planes and said that she could make them in her room and sell them.
I had to explain to her that there probably isn’t a real big market for paper planes but in no way did I want to dampen her spirit so I suggested that she learn how to do origami and paper folding and we’ll see what we can do with regards to selling them. Last night while she was asleep my partner and I set up a blog for her where she can share what she learns and maybe make a dollar or too along the way.
We showed her the blog this morning before she went to school and to say that she was excited would be an understatement. When she got home she sat down and cut out some rectangular pieces of paper, wrote our phone number on them and came and showed us her ‘business cards!’ Over time we are going to add puzzles, crosswords, word-find puzzles, instructions for paper folding and maybe even some video showing her putting her creations together. It is a very exciting time for her at the moment.
You never know where this venture will finish up, according to Wordtracker there is over 20,000 searches done every day for origami so there are definitely people interested in it but whether there is any money to be made for her we will have to see.
I love the way kids are oblivious to obstacles and attack every idea they have with everything they’ve got. Perhaps if we looked at things in our lives this way we might have the guts to try more things and give things our all when we do come up with a good idea. Sure, there has to be some risk assessment done to ensure we don’t fall flat on our faces but I wonder how many times we let the perceived ‘risks’ stop us from trying to achieve.
If your interested, Mikaela’s site is MyPaperFolding.com. It is a bit bare at the moment but she is doing her best to get the content together.
